    A gem-like little island amidst Sulu Sea, Lankayan has been declared part of a vast Marine Protected Area in countenance to its eco-tourism significance.

    Lankayan, an hour and a half boat ride north of Sandakan, is situated within the Sea Turtle Corridor. This is a great nesting place and foraging ground for sea turtles. In the months of June to September, the baby turtles are usually released to the sea.

    This island is undeniably getting popular among diving enthusiasts. The dive sites, most being just a few minutes boat ride away, boast of multi-colored macro and fauna together with fascinating wrecks. From March to May, whale shark sightings are regular around the island. A number of baby blacktip sharks may also be spotted and certainly something to watch out for. Jawfish Lair is one of the most popular sites where jawfish together with sting rays, snappers, groupers, anemone fish, fuislier, trumpet fish and nudibranches abound.

    Interesting addition to the itinerary is a visit to the Orangutan Sanctuary at Sepilok . It is located quite nearby Sandakan and offers such an exhilarating stroll to your trip. After the tour, the loungers make such a lovely spot to watch as sun sets at this wonderful island.

    Lankayan has a tropical climate. Southwest monsoon is in place by April to October while northeast monsoon by October to February.

  • Getting there and around

    Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah, is the central entry point for international tourists. There are several airline services that can be taken to get here. Air Asia is the most recommended flight for their very competitive prices especially when travelling from Hongkong, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

    If coming from Sarawak, land transportation is available to reach Kota Kinabalu.

    From Kota Kinabalu, another domestic flight will have to be taken to get to Sandakan. Land transfer follows going to Sandakan Yacht Club jetty. From here, Lankayan Island Dive Resort is reached via a 90-minute speedboat ride. For convenience, packages normally come with both return land and sea transfers.
